Kellee black after a long day of school, people rush home to check out their profile. they wait on the log-in screen, hoping to see a full mailbox or new comments on their pictures. this is the society known as myspace. it was meant to be a way for people to connect with other people all over the world. no one ever thinks that just by logging in and "commenting" each other can be harmful. they simply just search around and add new friends. some people add only those they know, whereas the more ambitious add everyone they can find that share any remotely similar interests. trains are created and many bulletins are posted. kind of like pokemon, the goal is to have as many friends as a person possibly can. " it's like the new bird flu, i have `myspace'", lacey briggs, senior, said. the problem with this is that people trust their so-called "friends" a little too much and are starting to use myspace to make real-life friends. people are forgetting about the big scare of the 90s, when girls were being kidnapped, assaulted and murdered all over the place because they decided to meet men they talked to online. just recently, a series of news reports surrounding a local teenager's death connected her to myspace. her name was jennifer crecente. she attended bowie high school and was only 18. as it turns out, a kid she had been dating for a couple of years was the murderer. the cops had accused myspace of being the reason behind her death. but even though crecente wasn't murdered through a connection on myspace, a lot of people were. there are at least 10 other murders connected to myspace, the most horrific being a girl from maryland who met her myspace interest for the first time only to be brutally beaten to death and left on the side man, the 48-year-old, to meet for a sexual encounter. the boys set up a time to meet, and went to the cops about the man. he is now charged on felony counts. cbs news reports that four girls in connecticut, all varying in age from 12 to 16, were sexually "i have a theory that if i don't know the person beforehand, then i don't add them, " briggs said. identity theft has become easier as well, thanks to the site. most recently, at cedar park high school, it seems everyone had a page. principal ron lafevers, had one created by an anonymous account. the page included the school's quote "go t'wolves" and a favorite song. the page even included a picture of the principal. lafevers took swift action, shutting down the false identity. but how many web pages out there on myspace have identities that are not real? even the boys that had the older man arrested had created a fake profile. it's just too simple. the problem many parents are worried about with their children going on myspace is the fact that many kids don't worry about listing their screen name or even a calendar of where they are going to be and when. online stalkers surf for that kind of information and having access to the teens' pictures only helps them find the kids even sooner. "as far as myspace goes, people who put their personal information on their page are setting themselves up for attack. they don't realize how many people view their page, " briggs said. many parents see the website as a cesspool for unknown danger, dangers that their kids do not see themselves. this theory is often true; parents have learned from experience what their children don't see right in front of them. many of the offenses were caused due to the victim's being naive. people simply don't think bad things will happen to them. many people have made a stand and chosen to boycott myspace in the hopes of the owner destroying it. some states are starting statewide boycotts of the webpage such as arkansas, whereas others are just speaking out against its use. in fact, myspace has paid workers that dedicate their whole day to surfing the site, looking for obscene materials to block out. state attorney general of connecticut richard blumenthal is working alongside the people who own myspace to filter out his own concerns that are involved in the website. many people have heated opinions about the myspace topic and whether or not it is used by sexual predators. most teens agree that if they weren't surfing the popular webpage, they would be out doing something that also isn't supervised. others agree that the site has caused teenagers to grow more vain and selfish. whether or not either of these statements are true, or even if they have anything to do with the influence of myspace, the fact of the matter is that many people were murdered and sexually assaulted through connections in myspace. the site looks to push into a more predator awareness direction and in the distant future, myspace will be parentally controlled. this might just be the downfall of myspace. then kids will find something else more interesting to spend their time doing.
My divorce finalized, so it was again time to marry. they say three times is the charm and i've always wanted to believe in magic. i had been married in vegas before and felt it was the place to do it. my last marriage had a beautiful ceremony in la, but we had waited too long to get a license. we went to vegas for our honeymoon and were officially married in a drive through. the lady performing the ceremony twice suggested we tip "the minister" heavily for good luck. i asked her "who was the minister she kept talking about?" in the spring of 2002, we had just finished bombing the hell out of afghanistan and there was lots of debate about who we should bomb next. i had been listening to the band creed while i worked and was anxious to see them in concert. their web site announced they were playing in las vegas on may 22nd. what a perfect st nd time to get married. we could go to vegas on the 21 , see creed on the 22 and be married on my dad's birthday, may 23rd. i could throw in the jimmie buffett concert on saturday as a show of good faith to my wife. we arrived late on tuesday night. in order to save a few hundred, we slept the first night at circus circus. what a dump. on wednesday morning we went over to the venetian, where we spent the rest of the trip. now that was a hotel. the rooms are all beautiful suites. i was told all of the games were rigged in favor of the customer. we were supposed to see creed that night. when i got the word that it was cancelled, it was too late to back out of the whole thing. the lead singer claimed to have gotten in a car accident. i've been in several accidents and they had little effect on my singing. instead, we had an excellent dinner with sara's sister and my soon to be brother-in-law. we gambled a little so we lost a little. spent a few bucks at the megabucks machine. the payout was , 000, 000. on thursday, we were married in the afternoon in a very cool ceremony on a gondola. the venetian had 8 weddings that day. they have a special white gondola for weddings. sara was incredibly beautiful! really beautiful and smart. The hurricane disaster here on the gulf coast has made one thing perfectly clear: the republican revolution of 1994 has failed. it has been 11 years since americans booted out democratic majorities in both the house and the senate and gave republicans control of the country. america, it seemed, bought into the republican rhetoric of a smaller, leaner government. americans thought they could reduce the debt and get the federal government out of their lives. they were tired of democrat spending and legislation filled with pork barrel projects. but federal government has not changed in 11 years. it's not leaner. it's not smaller. the steve nation's deficit is at record lev- burtt els. now our country is in a time of need and what we need here in south mississippi is money to rebuild. so, all attention in washington is going to focus on how to pay for the devastation brought by two hurricanes, katrina and rita. and then there's that expensive war project we have going in iraq. president bush's initial idea to just put the storm tab on the national deficit, already at record levels, met with resistence even from his own party. it was a ridiculous idea. now the leadership is scrambling to find offsets in spending. it's going to say quite a bit about the size of government if they, indeed, find 0 billion in spending cuts. a good starting place is the huge transportation bill recently passed. the bill, crammed with special little "pork" projects all over the country, was billion more than what the president had requested, but he had no trouble signing it. the bill included numerous items like the one for jackson county. the legislation provides million to widen mississippi 57 from interstate 10 to vancleave. that would have been nice, sure, but when you add up 6, 300 such projects around the nation, pretty soon we're talking serious money. the total came to 6 billion. i saw rep. roger wicker, from northeast mississippi, on television sunday morning. wicker was elected in 1994 and takes great pride in his conservative republican reputation, but he was a big supporter of the highway bill, because a lot of the 6.7 million earmarked for mississippi was going to projects in north mississippi. wicker also said that president bush's tax cuts, which were mainly aimed at america's higher income brackets, represented "sound government" practices. he said he hopes that the disasters will not keep congress from making those tax cuts permanent. tax cuts are fine -- i could use one myself -- but when our country refuses to live within its means, we have to borrow money to pay for those tax cuts. do republicans realize that our national debt is more than trillion? our deficit, which is the yearly amount by which spending exceeds revenue, is more than 0 billion and growing. interestingly, it was in the 1980s, under republican president ronald reagan, when the national debt started to expand, topping the trillion mark for the first time. so now, mother nature has handed the republican party its biggest test. i don't think its up for the task ahead. correspondent steve burtt can be reached at sburtt bellsouth or at 228 ; 522-6401. cheap poker chips

On an early summer evening in 2006, a small group of parents sat around a table in a wood-paneled room of the emma pendleton bradley hospital, the nation's first children's psychiatric hospital. it was the twice-monthly meeting for mothers and fathers whose children have been or still are patients at the hospital. their children differed in age, gender and in their diagnoses. but the parents were united in a shared experience of caring for sons and daughters with mental illness. they remembered the unsettling moment when they first brought their child to the hospital; the difficulty of getting a child to take medicine that might control his or her disorder; the weariness of coping with a longrunning condition, and the isolation they felt when neighbors never seemed to rush over with a casserole as they might for an illness they understood better, such as cancer. hanging on the walls behind the parents were several large 19th century oil paintings: a little girl clutching a rag doll; a bearded man with bright eyes; and a woman wearing elegant victorian dress. the woman's handsome face was neither smiling nor frowning, but instead, seemed endlessly sad. the portraits were of emma bradley and her parents, george and helen bradley. the elder bradleys created the hospital after years of trying to find help for emma, severely brain-damaged at age 7. "out of this misfortune of our only child, " george wrote in his will, "has grown the purpose and the hope that from the affliction of this one life may come comfort and blessing to many suffering in like manner." as the parents' meeting continued, it was as if no time had passed in the years since those paintings were hung. everyone in the room, past and present, regardless of wealth or status, was just a parent, joined in a common cause, determined to turn tears into hope.
